1.1. What do you think is meant by ‘themes’ in the literature?

When you read and take notes from sources, you should identify the ideas/topics/issues that are discussed. Next, you must analyse and synthesise your notes to identify how different sources deal with the same ideas/topics/ issues. These will be the emerging themes that you have found in the literature.

1.2. Good ways to identify themes

• colour to highlight similar ideas in texts
• use mind map to draw connections between texts
• matrix/Excel to note idears from the texts

• Emerging-Technology Product : A physical consumer product that utilizes new technology. Eg. 3D printers.
• Emerging-Technology Service : A set of new technological processes, activities and systems that collectively meet a public or business need. Eg. Artificially intelligent public transport system.
• Emerging-Technology Initiative : An enterprise that utilizes new technology to tackle applied problems or social issues. Eg. Desalination projects to provide drinking water.
• Emerging-Technology Event : A planed gathering that utilizes new technology. Eg. WWDC

• define a clear question to answer
• to plan an approach to answering it
• to explain how the proposed research will add to / develop / challenge existing literature in the field
• to persuade the audience of the importance of the work, that it is feasible and that you are the right person to undertake it
